Fall Leaf Paint Prints

Supplies

  • Leaves
  • Paint (or paint sticks)
  • Paper

Instructions

  1. Go outside and observe signs of Fall.
  2. Collect fallen leaves.
  3. Use paint or paint sticks to paint a leaf.
  4. Press the leaf down onto a piece of paper.
  5. Keep painting and pressing until you are happy with your work of art!

Custom Carry Pouch

Just in time for carrying back to school essentials such as hand sanitizer and mask.

Supplies

  • Plain carry pouch for decorating
  • Sharpie permanent markers
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Mini spray bottle or dropper

Instructions

Sharpie Tie-dye Method:

  1. Draw and colour your pouch with sharpie brand permanent markers.
  2. Spray your drawing with rubbing alcohol until the colours start to bleed.
  3. Allow your creation to air dry.
  4. Repeat process. Continuing to layer colours until you are happy with the result.

Note:

Use your customized pouch to hold your favourite mask and hand sanitizer. Working through activities such as this one can help children to feel more comfortable with having to wear a mask at school.

  • Use fabric markers to write your name and create unique patterns and drawings
  • Other fun items to Tie-Dye are t-shirts, pillow cases and tote bags

Cloud Dough

Supplies

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • Optional: 5 drops of lavender, orange or lemon essential oil

Instructions

  1. Add flour and vegetable oil together in a large bowl.
  2. Add 5 drops of essential oil.
  3. Mix the ingredients together with your hands and knead to form a dough.

Notes:

Cloud dough is as an ultra soft crumbly yet moldable dough.

This recipe can be made in full and stored in a plastic bin with lid for sensory play. Or, the ingredients can be reduced by half, if you would like to make a smaller amount.

Adaptations

  • Use ice cream props for an ice cream shop (pompoms for sprinkles)
  • Create a menu (writing skills and literacy)
  • Use little cups, mini sand toys and molds for play
  • Add animals for small world play
  • Use measuring cups for practicing math skills and measuring

Taste Safe Paint

Supplies

  • 1 can of condensed milk
  • Food colouring
  • Paint brushes or fingers

Instructions

  1. Divide condensed milk into multiple small containers and add a few drops of food colouring to each container.
  2. Paint!
  3. Remember process over product 🙂

Note:

Although this painting requires extra drying time, it is a wonderful taste safe paint for infants and toddlers. It dries with a beautiful shine.

Wooden Peg People Painting

Supplies

  • Wooden peg dolls
  • Acrylic paint
  • Mod podge
  • Paint brush

Instructions

  1. Paint the wooden peg dolls with the design and features of your choosing.
  2. Allow paint to dry.
  3. Seal the painted wooden peg dolls by painting over with mod podge.
  4. Allow paint to dry.
  5. Enjoy bringing your wooden peg dolls to life!

Note:

Older children can draw an outline with a pencil before they begin painting, if they have a particular design in mind.

Younger children can use non toxic paint or markers to design their wooden peg people.

Lantern Jar

Supplies

  • Mod podge
  • Plastic or glass jars
  • Paint brush
  • Dried flowers, leaves, herbs
  • Battery powered tea light

Instructions

  1. Dry flowers and leaves using a flower press. You can also place the flowers and leaves between two sheets of wax paper, which is then placed under a couple of very heavy books. Leave it to dry for a couple of weeks or until flowers are dry.
  2. Paint the jar with mod podge and then stick the flowers to the wet surface.
  3. Allow to dry.
  4. Paint over your design with mod podge to seal. It is okay to have flowers that are sticking out of the jar; these do not need to be sealed.
  5. Allow to dry.
  6. Place your battery powered tea light in the jar and admire. This makes a great night light!

Adaptations

  • Use other craft supplies that you have at home to create a one of a kind lantern
  • Use pieces of tissue paper to create a beautiful stained glass lantern
  • Cut out pictures from an old magazine or print pictures from your computer. Perhaps a dinosaur themed lantern for the young paleontologist

No Cook Play Dough

Supplies

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 3/4 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp of oil (add to water)
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • Optional:
  • Food colouring
  • Lavender essential oil (10 drops)

Directions

  1. Mix all of the dry ingredients together.
  2. If adding food colouring and essential oil, add to boiling water.
  3. Add wet ingredients to dry and knead until dough forms.
  4. Have fun!

Note: Only an adult should be adding the boiling water.

Adaptations

  • Use buttons or shapes for counting or pattern making by sticking the items to play dough
  • Use play dough to create an ice cream shop or bakery
  • Add kitchen tools and allow children to explore different uses
  • Use with peg dolls or animal figurines in small world play
  • Add empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls to create structures
  • Playdough makes an excellent addition to loose parts

Cloud Slime

Supplies

  • 4 cups shaving cream
  • 1/2 cup white glue
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp contact lens solution
  • Food colouring

Instructions

  1. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Knead, knead and knead some more. Continue to knead until the slime is no longer sticky.
  3. Have a slime of a time playing with your cloud slime!

Adaptations or Extensions of Play

  • Stamp letters and words into the cloud slime
Stamps can be used to stamp words into the slime.

Rock Painting

Supplies

  • Rocks
  • Acrylic paint or paint pens
  • Paint brushes
  • Mod podge (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash rocks in warm water with soap and allow rocks to dry.
  2. Feel inspired and paint a picture, design or words on the rock.
  3. Allow the paint to dry.
  4. Once your rock painting has dried, you may wish to apply a coat of mod podge for better protection.
  5. Remember to focus on “process over product” with young children.

Corn Syrup Paint

Supplies

  • Corn syrup
  • Food colouring

Instructions

  1. Add a few drops of food colouring to desired amount of corn syrup (a little goes a long way).
  2. Give it a stir.
  3. Use your imagination and enjoy painting. Once your painting dries, it will have a beautiful shine.

Note: If you find the corn syrup is too thick, you can add a small amount of water or heat up the corn syrup.
